It contained 46 photographic reproductions of some of the great works of Western art from the Italian Renaissance to the nineteenth century, as well as two contemporary photographs, supplied by photographer and publisher William Notman.

It was originally published in 12 fascicles containing 4 photographs each, with accompanying texts by Thomas Davies King.
