It contained 46 photographic reproductions of some of the great works of Western art from the Italian Renaissance to the nineteenth century, as well as two contemporary photographs, supplied by photographer and publisher William Notman.

It was originally published in 12 fascicles containing 4 photographs each, with accompanying texts by Thomas Davies King.

The publication was dedicated to Vicomte Monck, Governor General of Canada from 1861-1867. Most bound copies of the book also contain a list of about 360 subscribers.</text>
